"Without
trust, we have nothing."
These are the words which have haunted Melanie Erickson for six years. When she walked out of the house Xavier Ross bought as their forever home, she thought she was closing that door permanently, but fate had other plans.
Xavier Ross tried to keep everyone at a distance until Melanie came into his life. The more he tried to fight his feelings for her, the more he fell in love. One rash decision fractured the trust that was essential to their relationship.
Six years later, she is the last person he expects to see walk through his front door. Will Xavier and Mel be able to learn to trust one another again so they can fulfill a dying woman’s wish?

Review
Emotional. Raw. Conflicting.
Heartbreaking. And everything else. This story had me crying both happy tears
as well as sad tears. But the sad tears weren’t just sad, they were heart
wrenching, ugly cry tears. I fear my review cannot do this story justice. A
story about love lost, loss, repair, and love found. Death. Children. Cancer.
But there is romance, and change, and a whole lot of sweetness.
I can’t imagine watching your wife die
would ever be an easy task. Then the one person who opened you up to love and
also the person who shattered your hear walks through your door to take care of
your dying wife, I really cannot imagine the emotions that Xavier was feeling.
He was a man who was composed, strong, and in control of himself and his life.
Yet this entire situation was out of control. As he handled Alyssa’s illness
and death, he also now had to now understand her wish for after she passed.
Melanie. For Xavier, it was a shock for
her to show up at the house that he bought for her, but for Melanie, she was
able to prepare herself. She was able to get ready to face her past head on.
What she wasn’t prepared for was becoming instant friends with the woman she was
taking care of. The woman living in the house she was supposed to be living in
with the man she was supposed to be with. Let alone falling in love with the
little boy living in that house. So while she was able to do her job
professionally, she had to also address the feelings beyond what was typical of
her job. Then there were the wishes Alyssa expressed to her verbally and in
written form. How do you reconcile all of those feelings?
Ms Johnson took us on quite the emotional
ride with this one. My chest literally ached through a lot of this book. The
emotions were so strong. I felt as if I was losing a part of me as I watched
Alyssa’s illness take over. I felt conflicted about cheering for Xavier and
Melanie as their love appeared to never have gone away. My heart broke for the little
boy who was losing his mom. The story concludes and there is no cliffhanger.
This is a beautiful story, but make sure you have plenty of tissues on hand!
