Book Blitz: Change of Heart by S.E. Edwards

Persevere, and survive.

Those are my two guiding words. I never knew either of my parents. I have no family and no home. The only person I could ever rely on was myself. In this cruel world, that's about as much as I can ask for.

Love? Hah. Don't talk to me about love. I stopped believing in it the day my first boyfriend ripped out my heart three years ago.

That's why love is the last thing on my mind when I leave a packed college bar with a captivating stranger. Yet everything changes when I'm awakened in the middle of the night by a pounding at the door. Suddenly, an arrangement meant for just one night threatens to become something much deeper.

All expectations are thrown to the wind as I'm tangled in a dangerous world unlike anything I can believe. The man I met has secrets swirling around him like a dark cape. I'm about to become his biggest one...

About the Author

I'm Scarlett Edwards. I'm a full-time student (2nd year, undergrad) and part-time writer. I hope to switch those around soon!

I'm kind of old fashioned. I write all my stories using paper and ink. At the end of the day, I transcribe them on my laptop. It takes a bit longer, but writing in a notebook really focuses my thoughts.

I love vintage photography. I have an old-school film camera that was my mom's from before I was born. I use it to take pictures almost every day.

Yours to Savor is the first full book I worked on.  It went through six drafts, and took me ten months to complete.  In the two months since getting it done, I finished two drafts of brand new stories.  I'm getting faster!

I love hearing from my readers. I love getting feedback about my books. I'm just getting started, and plan on doing this writing gig for a long, long time.

I take inspiration from all the indie romance authors. Addison Moore, Samantha Young, Colleen Hoover, Jessica Sorensen, and everyone else…. you girls rock!

Together, we stumble toward the elevator. Rich breaks away for a second to hit the button. The light doesn’t come on.

“Damn,” he growls, “it’s busted again.”

I’m one step ahead of him. I’d spotted the stairs when we entered. I grab his hand and pull him after me with no hesitation. I start up the cement stairwell, determined to get to his room as fast as possible.

“Penny, wait.”

I look back, confused. “What?”

A devilish smile plays on his lips. “Only this.” Without warning his hands wrap around my waist, and I’m being lifted up as easily as if I were a doll. He turns to the side and presses my body against the wall, suspending me between him and the concrete.

His mouth crashes down on mine again. I curl my legs around his torso, locking my ankles together, and kiss him back with the passion reserved for a lover after ten long years apart. I didn’t think it was possible, but I’m getting even more turned on. Rich’s hands move down to grasp the outside of my thighs, and I moan into his kiss as the muscles of my core clench in sinful fashion. I want him so
badly. If we don’t get somewhere private soon, I won’t be wholly opposed to jumping him in public.

I gasp as he steps away, freeing me from the wall. I start to fall, but one of his hands darts down to catch me just beneath the knees.  The other one cradles my shoulders. Before I know it, I’m slung across his   arms like a bride on her wedding night.

“I’ve always wanted to carry a girl up these stairs,” Rich admits.

I laugh, and wrap my arm around his neck. “Oh, you are just the best type of romantic.”

Four flights of stairs later, Rich pushes open the fire door to a dimly-lit hallway. He carries me down the hall and stops in front of an entrance on the right. He sets me down, then fishes around in his jeans for the key. When the door creaks open, he sweeps a hand out in front of him. “Welcome to my humble abode.”

I walk in, curious about his apartment. I tend to side with the camp of people who believe that a person’s living arrangements can reveal a lot about his personality. But, I don’t find much to work with here.

The apartment is sparse and dark. Pale moonlight filters in through the balcony window, shining down on the only piece of furniture present: a queen size mattress lying on the floor of the living room. The red brick walls are totally empty—no girly posters or other things I might expect in a bachelor’s apartment. There are no lamps, no chairs, no couches.

After a moment, I notice a second piece of furniture: a small, old-school CRT TV camped in one corner of the studio apartment.

Rich switches on the light. “So?” he asks, “what do you think?”

I walk past the entrance. There’s one hall leading away from the room. It is filled with brown cardboard boxes. Lots and lots of boxes. “Did you just move in or something?”

Rich laughs behind me. “Yeah, something like that. You want a drink?”

“A drink?” I say. “No, I—”

The words catch in my throat as he grabs my hips and spins me around. I had no idea he’d come so close. He’d moved from the door to me without making a sound. His fingers lock together against my lower back, and he tugs me into him, pressing my belly to his waist. I feel his growing erection right away, and a diabolical excitement builds inside me.

Nothing happens.

For a long moment, Richard just holds me like that, staring into my eyes as I’m left dangling off his arms. His irises are the color of sea mist. I’m hypnotized by the deep intensity I see brewing just beneath the surface. I have no doubt that that type of intensity is mirrored in my eyes.

Then, moving slowly, as if restraining himself, Richard lowers his mouth to cover mine. This time, his kiss is sweet and gentle. Subtle and caring. He explores my upper lip first, then traces the line going to the corner of my mouth. His lips form a perfect mold over mine.

I was wrong before. This is the kiss reserved for a lover you haven’t seen in ten years.

Bad Things by R.K. Lilley Blog Tour, Review and Interview!

 * COVER *

* SYNOPSIS *

"Danika hasn’t had an easy life. Being insanely attracted to bad boys has never helped make it easier.

One look at Tristan, and every brain cell she possessed went up in smoke. This man was trouble with a capital T. It was a given.
She knew better. Bad boys were bad. Especially for her. Considering her history, it was crazy to think otherwise. So why did crazy have to feel so damn fine?

For as long as she could remember, Danika had been focused on the future with single-minded purpose. Tristan came along and taught her everything there was to know about letting go, and living in the present. She fell, hard and deep. Of course, that only made her impact with the ground that much more devastating."

* REVIEW *

Danika and Tristan's story is one of trust, friendship, love, sizzling hot attraction and self destruction. Is it possible to love and care about someone but destroy them at the same time? Such is the relationship between them. I both loved them and hated them together. It was emotionally draining most of the second half, but I was so connected to them. I really wanted it to work. I wanted them to have a HEA. What I got, I didn't expect. Something so deep and so sad, yet so beautiful. Wow, R.K. Lilley, you blew my socks off. What most people have asked me about this book is if it was a BDSM story. And I surprisingly told them no. I totally expected it to be that. That's what the other stories were and that's what I thought R.K. Lilley's style was. Boy was I wrong! She can write anything and I would not be able to put it down. I can't even tell you how many things I highlighted. (Ok, I checked...73) I read the book in one day and the next day could not stop thinking about it. I'm craving the second part of their story. To be able to not end with a cliffhanger but leave the reader wanting more is a true talent.

"I knew that we were going to be a dangerous combination. Bad things were going to happen if we spent too much time around each other."

Tristan is one of my new favorite book boyfriends. First of all, let me tell you how domestic this guy is! He cooks for Danika just about every day. Even after a late night out. He loves the nightlife and introduces it to Danika. They have a blast while trying to hang out as friends. Sometimes this gets Tristan in trouble and he can't control his temper. Enter, James Cavendish. I was so happy to see the appearances he made. He sure has an affect on everyone. Tristan knows how to make a woman swoon and I was no exception. I never got tired of him and his "ways to remain friends" with Danika. Most of his friends were great except for Dean. I wanted to kick that douche bag in the junk, repeatedly. I really hope that Tristan gets rid of him in the future. He is bad news for sure!

Danika is a bit immature, but I love her. She is young and still discovering herself. Her sense of humor and quick wit kept me laughing (and highlighting). The sexual tension between her and Tristan was palpable. So bad that it kept sending him to the showers. One of the funniest scenes in the whole book was when she got caught. Can't elaborate, but let me just say, you probably shouldn't be using certain buzzing objects when others are home. She put her trust in Tristan and he was a comfort zone that she didn't have in a long time. The thought of their friendship dissolving is sad and that's why they were so careful about each other. The rest of the ladies were a blast too. Bev and the other 'Fuck Anonymous' ladies were hilarious and reminded me of my own group (without the huge age disparities). Frankie is one of my favorites as well. I'm dying for a series about her. I also love that typically when she is around, Mr. Cavendish is not far behind.

When things turned serious, I was sad at how Tristan was coping, or not. His past made him not want to admit to loving someone. His actions caused great pain for himself, Danika and others. The tragedy by the story's end was sobering. I didn't have a dry eye for the last 10%. If anything good came out of it was that two people who needed support chose to lean on each other. That decision sealed the deal for me. Because they chose that over their own pride, it made me love them and the story that much more. I get annoyed with angst just for the sake of angst, but this was so smart and so real, I needed it to end the way it did.

"I'll never forget that for as long as I live; the way you were my strength, when I was too weak to even stand."

I'm beyond excited that we get a whole second book on them. R.K. Lilley is amazing at what she does and this series is one of my top faves. This book can be a standalone, but I love going back in time and getting more of my favorite characters from the Up In The Air trilogy. I would recommend all of them and doesn't matter if you read the trilogy first or Bad Things first.

xo,  D

* AUTHOR INTERVIEW *

D:  When you originally wrote the Up In The Air series, did you have plans for the supporting characters to have their own books too?
R.K. Lilley: As I developed some of the supporting characters, I did begin to plot out some stories in my head, but not necessarily with the idea of writing them their own books.  Some of them just sort of stayed in my head, until I became obsessed with telling their stories.

D:  Are there any plans for Frankie to have a book of her own?
R.K. Lilley:  I don’t have any plans at this time, but I do love Frankie.

D:  When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
R.K. Lilley:  I’ve been an avid reader since early childhood, and making my own stories has always just gone hand in hand with my love of reading.  I’d say it was a concrete concept in my mind somewhere between age ten and twelve.

D:  In what environment do you write your best stories?
R.K. Lilley:  Everywhere.  I wrote the horseback riding sex scene in Mile High while I was on a plane on the way to Tokyo.  I have two young kids, so I write wherever, and whenever I can.
D:  In your books, the characters are always in fabulous cities/countries.  Where would your dream vacation be and have you been there?
R.K. Lilley:  I want to see as much of the world as I possibly can.  I went to Japan last summer, and that had been my dream vacation for years.  It was amazing.  Now I’m obsessing about visiting Australia.  I’ve never been.
D:  Do you love Las Vegas?  having gone there a few times, I think it's a great setting for a story.
R.K. Lilley:  I do love Vegas.  I lived there for ten years, and I’ve written several books based there.  It is a crazy city.  Limitless fun and Trouble to be had there.
D:  What are 3 things that you won't leave home without?
R.K. Lilley:  My laptop, my phone, cute shoes.
D:  Which character, male or female, from all of your books do you relate to the most?
R.K. Lilley:  I relate to all of them in some way, but the closest to my actual personality is probably Jillian from Breathing Fire.
D:  What is your favorite beverage?
R.K. Lilley:  Coffee.  Mmm coffee.

Review
So it seems that hockey romance is one of the new trends. You won’t find this girl complaining! I went to my fair share of hockey games just to watch hot guys throughout college! Definitely don’t mind reading this one.
I really enjoyed this novel! I always enjoy seeing a woman is strong & independent, but can realize that it is ok to depend on a guy. And then a guy that actively pursues a girl, oh yes.  The writing flowed and kept me interested throughout the entire story. There was an added element of drama concerning the ex which kept you guessing how things might go down and when, but wasn’t cheesy or corny.

I also really enjoyed the mental health aspect of this entire story. Considering Lacey’s best friend is a psychiatrist, it is a main theme throughout the story and addresses various issues. It does this without dragging the story to a depressing level though. I really liked that!

This was a very happy read and it kept me smiling throughout the story!

~*~
Alternate Point of View
Lacey was excited and nervous for their first date. When they got to the beach, Jody led her over to a bench and asked her to sit. She sat down and looked up at him wishing he would kiss her again. Like he could read her mind, before he turned to walk back to the truck to retrieve their picnic items, he bent down and kissed her.

She wished she knew what he was thinking. He lingered a bit longer, and she thought he might be catching her scent. She personally loved the minty chocolate soap she’d used, but would he? It wasn’t a scent that one would typically associate with soap.

“I love the way you smell.” Pressing his lips to hers again quickly, he turned to walk away. As he walked away, Lacey sat there enjoying the view. He was such a pleasure to look at, whether he was coming or going.

Jody walked back over to Lacey with a basket on one arm and a blanket on the other. Aside from being able to spend the night with him, she couldn’t think of a better way to spend an evening. To her eternal mortification, Lacey felt tears prick the back of her eyes. Mother Nature, what a bitch. What were the chances of her being unable to make love to Jody for the first time when every fiber of her being had told her that tonight would be the night? She wanted to throat punch Mother Nature. What could she say? Hormones made her violent.

Blog Tour, Review and Giveaway: Consequences by Aleatha Romig

*~* SYNOPSIS *~*

"Besieged by memories of a brutal abduction, Claire Nichols wakes in an unfamiliar bedroom, within a luxurious mansion. Her recollections have one common denominator, the man she just met, Anthony Rawlings.
Unbeknownst to Claire, for a very long time, she has been within Anthony’s sights. Many of the pivotal events in her life occurred, due to his sinister manipulation. Every action has a consequence, and his actions result in their chance meeting.

More than a psychological thriller, Consequences is a vivid story of one woman’s struggle to survive incomprehensible circumstances. Every aspect of her being suddenly depends upon the tall, wealthy, dark haired, dark eyed businessman. Anthony Rawlings is known to the world as prosperous, benevolent, and kind. Claire quickly learns that he can also be a menacing controlling captor.

With few options but concession, Claire attempts to earn her freedom, while enduring a hellish existence that truly appears perfect. Persevering tests and trials, she struggles to retain her pure Midwest values and beliefs. Encouraged by memories of a loving upbringing, she gains strength in the simplest of joys: solitude in nature and good in the face of evil.

His goal in sight, Anthony’s calculated agenda encounters an unforeseen detour. He becomes captivated by Claire’s beauty, resilience, and determination. The interaction of these two compelling characters instigates strong emotions: fear, anger, love, and lust. Claire and Anthony’s tumultuous journey flows into uncharted waters of intrigue and passion.

Utilizing vivid detail, this 167,000-word novel unfolds like a movie, before the eyes of its readers. From the opening criminal abduction, through twists and turns, to the unlikely romantic thrills, the suspense climaxes as Anthony’s motivation becomes evident.

Anthony and Claire must decide if they will stay true to one another, or allow preceding actions to result in justifiable Consequences."

*~* TEASER *~*

While still in the bathroom, her heart rate increased as she heard the faint beep again. He didn’t knock. He just opened the door and entered. Claire imagined him surveying the empty suite. If she stayed in the bathroom, would he eventually come for her? Or leave? He waited silently in the bedroom. It took a minute or two. But slowly, Claire opened the bathroom door and entered the suite.
She used all her strength to suppress the fears that screamed to get out, determined to meet him head-on at his mind game. The first things she saw as she entered the suite were his eyes, his dark black eyes, resembling voids or black holes. His lips were moving. He was talking, yet Claire could only hear the memories of the previous night. She walked to the bookcase at the far end of the suite,
only hear the memories of the previous night. She walked to the bookcase at the far end of the suite, feigning strength.
The fake resolve melted as she turned to see the eyes staring directly at her. Then almost instantaneously, he was there, right in front of her. His proximity caused her stomach to wrench, bringing back the nasty bile from earlier.
He grabbed her chin, pulling her eyes and face toward the dark voids. His strong voice was deep, slow, and authoritative. “Shall we try this once more.” It wasn’t a question but a statement. “It is customary for one person to respond to the greeting of another. I said good evening.”
Claire’s knees went weak at his touch. She wanted to yell, to run, but she couldn’t let herself. If she couldn’t be strong, she could at least avoid fainting. “I’m sorry. I don’t believe I am feeling well.” With his grip still upon her chin, she knew he could feel her body tremble.
He repeated, “Good evening, Claire.” This time, it was more drawn-out. His eyes were so cold. Claire couldn’t distinguish what they said, only see the depth of their infinite darkness.
 “Good evening, Anthony.”

*~* REVIEW *~*

Consequences is a dark, psychological thriller that makes you question everything you think is right or wrong.  Anthony Rawlings is calculated, controlled, manipulative and ruthless.  He also has two distinct sides to his personality.  He seriously pissed me off most of the time.  I wanted to punch him. (down in the lower region ;) He breaks Claire down so bad that her only option is to fall for him.  This story does not glamorize the Captor/captive relationship.  It is scary real but spares you some of the gruesome details.  The constant repetition of his lessons and consequences made me feel like I was being watched and I was afraid of him.  He surely is a villain!

Claire Nichols started this story as one person and ended as another.  From the start she was strong, but didn't know how much she could handle.  So many times Anthony says how she stands up to him like no one else does.  I gave her so much credit for that.  She also had her own methods of controlling him.  No one would notice but it gave her the strength she needed to go on.  I did love how refined Claire became and how her outward appearance was nothing but polished and perfect, eerily so.  I still don't understand how someone can physically bring you so close to death and not only do you forgive that person but you give them your heart.

It is really hard to describe the feelings that this story gave me.  Most times I thought how wrong it was.  Occasionally there were sweet moments.  Several times I was scared for the situation that Claire had put herself in.  Aleatha Romig does not spare you any details and makes sure that this story gets in your head and stays there.  Psychological thriller for sure, Consequences will keep you up late at night wanting to find out the next mind game between Anthony and Claire.  It is a long journey, but one totally worth taking.  Appearances are not always what they seem. I can't wait for the sequel, Truth!
