RELEASE DAY: Finding My Forever by Heidi McLaughlin

Everywhere I look, my friends are settling down - marriage, children, white picket fences; but not me. Marriage isn’t in the cards for me. I’m a ladies man.

A rock star.

I was born and raised in the industry.
I love everything about my life, especially the attention from the women that my status brings me.

Women find me. I don’t chase. I know what they want and they know I’ll deliver.

But after one look, one touch, one night...

Now I’m the one doing the chasing.

I need to find a way to show her that I’m serious, that I can change.
I need to find a way to show her that I can love her fully, and only her.
I need to find a way to show her that she’s my forever.

* SYNOPSIS *

"Sometimes love burns so hot in your veins that it consumes
all rational thought.

That's why Brock and I never had a chance.  I had to start my life over. College was my
chance to become someone new. I changed everything about myself to fit in, but
one person saw through my facade.

The attraction between Abel and I was undeniable, but I
still hadn't healed from the painful secret I carried around with me. Abel
struggled to get me to face my past in order to move forward. In doing so, he
revealed a secret of his own; one that changed everything I thought I knew.

A secret that would bring Brock back into my life and force
me to face the truth of what really happened the day I lost him."

Wow, this book is certainly different!  I started it sort of typical and ended with my jaw left hanging open.  Delilah (Lie) has a dark past that she is clinging on to.  Mainly, someone she is clinging on to, Brock. Moving on has not been easy for her but she finds herself hanging out with people who make poor choices and are not true friends.  You get to know certain facts here about her and Brock, her childhood, but not the whole story.  I was waiting for more.  To be honest, the beginning was slow for me.  Getting to know Lie and re-living her flashbacks was a bit tedious.  It was in fact necessary for later.

As the story picked up, Lie meets Abel.  He is part of this "so called" friend group.  His banter with Lie was funny and at times endearing.  I really wanted her to just break down her walls and fall for him.  He had other things in mind. He kept coming back, kept showing up in her life.  She couldn't figure out why this strong attraction was there.

Reading along in this book, you might wonder why all the fuss is out there about Perfect Lie?  Why is everyone raving about this?  Well, you have to read to find out.  It's not until the latter part of the book.  Lie begins her tale.  She tells us in agonizing detail what really happened that day.  What happened to Brock is revealed.  I can assure you, it is nothing that you would have guessed.  It's a complete mind fuck but also sort of beautiful.  I loved the ending.  I loved the epilogue.  I kind of want more of the epilogue because it is so unique!  Awesome story with an amazing ending that will knock you out!

add-to-goodreads-button31Synopsis
Make me, Channing. Make me fall. Push me, shove me, just make sure I get there.” I shout at him, taking a step back. His eyes clash with mine. I read the challenge there, making me take another step back. He stalks the few steps to me and grabs my arms slamming his forehead down on mine, “I’ll make you.” His lips skim against mine as he continues to speak, “And I’ll be falling right there with you.”
Paisley Vaughn grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. After finding her mother dead from an overdose, Paisley and her baby sister are shipped off to live with her maternal grandparents.
She always knew they were rich, she just didn’t realize how rich they were. Now she’s being forced to go to a prestigious high school. One where the tuition is more money then she’s ever seen.
Thinking these rich kids are going to be snobbish and rude, she’s surprised to find the Vaughn name means she is untouchable. Well unless your name is Channing Southerland.
Paisley has to navigate her new life and all the new people in it. While her mother might have lied about her grandparents, no one is lying about Channing. He’s beautiful, mean, arrogant, and turning her on.
Before long a war is fought, leaving Paisley wondering if she’ll be ruined or made. Though she might just fall irrevocably in love.

Review
Another new author for me and another author I am going to have to stalk. I really need these folks to stop writing such great books! Well, my bank account needs them to stop writing such good books because I'm gonna go broke. With all that said...

Once I started this story, I couldn't put it down. It was intriguing to me to see how quickly Paisley would transition in to this new life and how her old life would be incorporated in to it. For her age, Paisley is so resilient. Senior year of high school is really rough for most kids and hers was far more complicated, so it was interesting to see that she not only coped with it, but thrived through everything. Channing was rough around the edges, but you could tell there was a good guy in there somewhere, he just needed to come out.

There were many twists that the story took that I did not expect at all. That grandmother is a real piece of work and I was pretty shocked about some revelations about her. The grandfather, while I wanted to shake him at times and tell him to wake up, he was a good guy. I just wish we could've gotten to know him a bit better earlier in the story. The supporting characters really added to the entire story without overshadowing the main characters.

There were a few parts that left me confused and had me going back to re-read them to see if I had missed something, but overall the story flowed very well. I have a feeling some of those parts may be clarified in the next story! Paisley and Channing's story is wrapped up by the end, but there was definitely somewhat of a cliffhanger for the next couple... though we don't know who it is!

I can't wait to read more by Amanda Heath in the future!

Excerpt
“Do you really want me to fall for you?” I whisper.
He gets up from the ground and runs his fingers through his hair. He seems frustrated but I don’t know why. “That’s what I want,” he whispers also. Looking back at me. I can’t see his eyes from here but I know what they look like. Full of fear and uncertainly. “I’m scared though. I’ve never been in a serious relationship. And I really don’t want to fuck this up.”
I’m scared too. Sometimes he consumes my thoughts and that was before I knew how he felt. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to be with him and I screw up. But I know that I want to fall for him. I know deep in my soul that I will never have a love in my life like I would with Channing.
And that’s the scariest thought I’ve ever had.
“I don’t know if that’s what I want,” I tell him looking away.
He runs his fingers through his hair yet again. “Paisley, don’t fuck with my head. I’ve had enough of that in my life. I can’t do crazy bitches anymore.”
I flinch with the comparison to his mother. To my mother. “I’m not fucking with your head. Maybe we shouldn’t do this.”
I can see he’s pissed now. He’s unable to see my fear that I’m trying to push him away, like he was trying to push me away. “Stop. The. Fucking. Head. Games!” he yells, taking a deep breath after each word.
“I’m not!” I yell back. Who knows what the truth is anymore. I’ve been screwed by a lot of people, but I’m still here. I wouldn’t survive being fucked over by Channing. I wouldn’t survive him breaking my heart.
“Dammit Paisley! Open your fucking eyes! This is fucking real. You and me, that’s real. What we feel isn’t a fling. I’ve never felt this way about anyone in my life. Don’t take it from me,” his voice is pleading.
My body breaks out in a cold sweat and I wipe my palms on my leggings. My limbs shake and I don’t know if I’m mad or just plain fucked up. Maybe it’s me with the commitment issues. No, I know it is me. So I do something for myself, I let go of that fear. Though it comes out more like anger.
“Make me, Channing. Make me fall. Push me, shove me, just make sure I get there,” I shout at him, taking a step back. His eyes clash with me. I read the challenge there, making me take another step back.
He stalks the few steps to me and grabs my arms slamming his forehead down on mine. “I’ll make you.” His lips skim against mine as he continues to speak. “And I’ll be falling right there with you.”

About the books in the Trilogy

Book 1: Just Breathe

Ever Harding, an average teenager with a passion for swimming is about to turn eighteen. Out of the blue she has been dumped by her long time boyfriend, which is the ultimate of tragedies in her life. Little does she know that on that fated eighteenth birthday, she will have to make a choice that will change her life as she knows it, forever.

A month before her birthday, Ever meets Jack, a mysterious new boy with mesmerizing eyes. He affects her like no one else. This meeting sets things into a whirlwind she never would have dreamed. With Jack's guidance she discovers a family line that leads her to the sea. She must make the ultimate choice, stay on land where life as she knows it, won't change, or go and live in the sea as a mermaid with Jack.

Ultimately her choice sets into motion an even bigger decision, in which she has the fate of a race of people, in her hands. The people in the sea are in a feud, she will tip the balance. She must battle the ageless moral delimma of prejudice and race. Once she comes to terms with her life changing choices, she must ask herself, Did I make the right decisions?and Is Jack really who I think he is?

Book 2: Barely Breathing

Ever Harding used to believe in love. That is until she was left heartbroken by the only person she ever really loved, Jack, the mysterious boy from her history class. Little did she know he was born of the sea, on land to watch over her. But was he really? She made the ultimate sacrifice, to live in the sea as a mermaid, for Jack and for love. But she found that in the end, that love wasn't enough.

Now she finds herself alone, having to make a huge choice. She must decide whether to defend others against the choices she has made or fight for the freedoms of a population, she has just become a part of.

Ever's brother James, became a part of the sea not by any choice of his own, but he is willing to embrace it as long as a certain long legged, beauty is by his side. But as his sister found, things are not always as they seem.

In the end what they feared the most comes to reality, the battle, waged between staying true to life in the sea or changing a race of people to become more powerful and diverse. Will Ever and James survive the lines drawn in the sand or will they have to battle each other for what they believe?

Little do they know the battle in the end, will be something entirely different than what they were ready for.

Book 3: Forever Breathing

Ever Harding has finally found where she belongs, with Jack in the sea. Just when she thought she could start her new life, a new threat forms on the horizon. She must make her biggest choice yet. Is she willing to risk everything to save the love of her life and all she holds dear?

James discovers yet again that his purpose is greater than anything he could ever imagine. He thought he had it all figured out, but sometimes things can be very deceiving. Is he willing to stand up for all he believes is right?

In the final book of the ‘Just Breathe’ trilogy, Ever and James find themselves not against each other but fighting together to preserve the freedoms of others. Will they be able to defend the right to choose when the odds are hugely against them?

Review

Enjoyed this one? Yea, that is an understatement. I freaking LOVED this book. I’ve read it more times than I can even begin to count and I still cannot get enough of it! Jimmy “JD” Davis is the quintessential rocker, bad boy, and ladies man. He does one night stands and moves on with his life. Until one night, with one woman that he simply can’t get enough of.

I told Heidi before I even knew about this book, that Jimmy was my guy. I wanted him. There was something about his mysterious nature in the other books that drew me to him. I wanted to know him and, quite frankly, just wanted him. While Liam is all hot and wonderful and Harrison is amazing and romantic, there was something about Jimmy that drew me in and held my attention. I had no fear that I would be disappointed considering Heidi has never disappointed me with her writing or her men.

So this story. Jimmy and his lady are both very mysterious. They both have pasts that have a bit of mystery behind them. Jimmy surprised me more times than one throughout the story. He isn’t slow and sweet like Harrison. He is impulsive and relatively reckless in the way he makes choices. But that is what makes this story unique and stand out. He doesn’t do things traditionally, but he does do the RIGHT thing. He isn’t romantic, but then again, he totally is. Jimmy stays true to himself throughout the story. Every decision he makes is with everything he is. He is 100% dedicated to each seemingly impulsive choice he makes. He is so freakin’ hot and I have no doubt that you will love him and want to hop in the shower with him, too.

Jenna – our leading lady - starts out with quite a doozy. Let’s be real, just it being Jenna is quite the twist considering we don’t know a ton about her and who would have guessed she would fall for the infamous bad boy of the band? She starts her story with several different shocking revelations. Her past is haunting and her current predicament is quite difficult. Though her past and her present are not easy, she is one stand-up chick. She has fear, understandably, about her past coming back to her and ruining her future. She is a respectable chick and you will fall in love with her instantly. Watching this girl grow throughout the story – from relatively quiet and reserved, to being willing to stand up to her past and her future – is nothing short of phenomenal.

This is a story that you won’t want to put down, I guarantee it. It shows that opposites attract and make an explosion that is out of this world. You will admire both characters, shake your head at times, want to bash some heads in, cheer them on, and fall in love. The story is unique and the writing style is to die for. And there is no cliffhanger, but you will no doubt want more from the boys of 4225 West! The story that is Jimmy & Jenna is one that cannot be compared to others.

Bravo, Heidi McLaughlin, bravo!
